He should know what it takes to win the games and put pressure on the offense so that they cannot run out the clock on the opposing team. He has to know how to recruit well and bring talented players to the team. He has to get the most out of his athletes so that they can become better all-around players on the field. If he does not do these things, he will not be a successful head coach.
His ability to relate to his team and have their trust in him will make him very successful as a defensive coordinator. Coaches need to have a good rapport with their players. They need to be able to figure out when a player needs to work on a particular part of his game or if he needs to go out and learn a new scheme.
